A cartridge that costs less at checkout is not always the cheaper choice. The useful figure is its cost per printed page, and this printer yield calculation guide shows you how to work it out before your printer runs dry. Whether you print school notes at home or invoices for a growing business, a few simple numbers can make cartridge buying far less confusing.
What printer cartridge yield actually means
Page yield is the estimated number of pages a cartridge can print before it needs replacing. You will usually see it on the cartridge packaging or product listing, such as 1,000 pages for a black toner cartridge or 300 pages for a colour ink cartridge.
Most published yields are based on standardised test conditions. For laser toner, this commonly means pages with around 5% coverage: a short letter, a small logo or a few lines of text. Ink cartridge yields are also tested using a defined set of pages. This gives shoppers a fair way to compare cartridges, even when different brands use different printer technologies.
The key word is estimated. A 1,000-page cartridge does not guarantee exactly 1,000 pages in every home or office. For inkjet printers, calculate each colour separately if you can. A printer may use black, cyan, magenta and yellow cartridges at different rates. Compare like with like
A cost-per-page calculation only helps when you are comparing equivalent products. Check that both cartridges fit the same printer model and that the quoted yield refers to the same page type or test standard.
For example, compare a standard black cartridge with another standard black cartridge, or compare high-yield cartridges with each other. Do not judge a black cartridge against a multipack without allowing for the value of each colour included in the pack.

Say a genuine colour ink multipack costs $120 and contains four cartridges with an estimated combined yield of 1,000 pages for the pages you typically print. Its estimated consumables cost is 12 cents per page.
A compatible multipack for the same printer costs $68 and has a comparable combined yield of 1,000 pages. Its estimated cost is 6.8 cents per page. In this example, the compatible pack costs less both initially and over the life of the cartridges.
That said, check the exact product description rather than assuming every compatible option has the same yield as the original. Quality compatible cartridges are designed for specific printer models, but capacities vary just as they do with genuine ranges.
Why your real-world yield may be different
Published yield is a comparison tool, not a measure of every sheet that comes out of your printer. Your actual result can sit above or below the stated figure for several practical reasons.
Page coverage is the biggest factor. A five-page report containing mostly plain text might use less consumable material than one full-page colour image. Printing photos on glossy paper, large colour blocks, labels and high-resolution graphics will reduce yield more quickly.
Printer settings also matter. Draft mode generally uses less ink than best-quality mode, while duplex printing can lower paper use but does not necessarily halve ink or toner use. Some inkjet printers run cleaning cycles, particularly after long periods without printing. These cycles use a small amount of ink to help keep print heads clear.
With colour printers, black pages can sometimes draw on colour cartridges too, depending on the printer and its settings. If a printer produces a composite black from cyan, magenta and yellow, the colour tanks may run down sooner than expected. Check your printer settings if you want plain documents printed with black ink only.
Standard, high-yield and extra-high-yield cartridges

For mixed printing, keep it simple. Estimate your usual monthly black pages and colour pages separately, then apply the relevant cartridge costs. You do not need perfect records. Even a reasonable estimate can show whether a high-yield cartridge, a multipack or a different cartridge type will suit your usage better.
Buying cartridges with confidence
Before ordering, confirm your printer model, then check the stated yield and calculate cost per page. The printer name on the front may cover a whole series, so use the complete model number shown on the printer itself or in its settings. This helps avoid ordering a cartridge that looks right but is not compatible.
